The discovery on this program is the Clarinet Sonata by Egon Kornauth, who was one of the most frequently performed composers of his generation during his lifetime, and whose compositions were also included in the concerts of Schönberg’s Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen [Society for Private Musical Performances]. Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata in F minor certainly served as a model here: after all, it was Schönberg that pointed to Brahms’ forward-looking radicalism in his lecture “Brahms the Progressive.”
